You're Not A Number: Why The Scale Doesn't Matter

Our bodies and health are much more complex than a simple number.

What many people don't understand is that scales have nothing, or very little, to do with body fat. Factors such as height, muscle mass, water retention, mensturation and simply body type. Two people can weigh the same, but of course look very different. For example, someone who works out regularly may very well weigh more than someone with a similar body type who doesn't excercise at all simply because of his or her muscle mass.

Everyone's body is different: differently shaped, reactive and built. Body types are categories of the different shapes, reactivities and builds of different bodies; almost everyone has a different body type. Because of this, its near impossible to compare one body to another based on a number, because it means different things to the majority of diverse bodies.

Muscle, in fact, has a greater density and smaller volume than fat. Fat takes up about four times the space of muscle tissue, but weighs less. In other words, muscle weighs more than fat, but takes up about one fourth of the space.

Along with muscle tissue, water also adds to overall body weight. Our bodies are, indeed, eighty percent water; and of course, its one of the best things we can give them. At times, the human body retains more water than usual, bring up the number on the scale, and vice versa; but this is completely normal and most of the time, uncontrollable.

It is undeniable that total body weight fluctuates tremendously and it is near impossible to control, so trust your body, it knows what its doing; as long as it recieves the basic resources it needs to be healthy, it will do the rest by itself.
